MIRA COSTA HIGH SCHOOL
Mira Costa High School, located in Manhattan Beach, California, is a 4-year comprehensive public high school, nationally recognized for academic excellence. Michael Hernandez, M.F.A, who founded the nationally award-winning Media Arts program at Mira Costa School in 1999, has joined with Peace Works Travel to create one-of-a-kind educational film and broadcast journalism tours to Cuba, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Guatemala. These trips empower students to understand the causes and consequences of war and how American policies and military actions affect other countries. Students will acquire skills and practical strategies in subject research and interviews, developing their unique “voice,” and learn about documentary news production and hand-held media. Through a comprehensive itinerary balancing active learning with quiet reflection, students are encouraged to perceive war and conflict through a lens of compassion.
Combining cultural awareness, adventure travel, and Digital Storytelling these one-of-a-kind trips empower you to skillfully transmit global truths. Students learn key aspects of topic research, news gathering, story reporting, production and the distribution process. We provide insider’s access to notable locals with fascinating stories to share.Register Now

Students in his film and broadcast journalism courses produce powerful cinematic work that has had an impact on our local and national audience. By touring and meeting the people of Vietnam, students will experience living history and come to know a culture very different from their own. The documentary projects they create will give voice to the voiceless and make visible what is invisible in our own community.Learn More
